New Monetary Order: Why Bitcoin is Spreading through Latin America

In early June, El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele made a historic announcement: El Salvador would be the first country in the world to recognize bitcoin as legal tender. El Salvador is a “dollarized” economy. Because it doesn’t produce its own currency, its government can’t print money. Adopting BTC as a second currency may not seem like a bad idea. There are several potential benefits, but there are serious risks. What happens if El Salvador runs out of U.S. dollars? What happens to economic stability when bitcoin crashes? How can Salvadorans even use cryptocurrency when only 34% have internet access? At this special session, learn how the cryptocurrency movement is impacting financial access in communities in the U.S., Latin America and beyond, in a special fireside conversation with Michael Peterson, founder of Bitcoin Beach, a small town in El Salvador using bitcoin in daily life, and a key figure who consulted El Salvador’s president on adopting bitcoin. He will discuss the opportunities and challenges of using bitcoin in El Salvador and beyond. Then, our reporters will give tips on how to cover this cutting-edge beat by building global sources. Ask our reporters anything about bitcoin and digital finance, how they impact financial access around the world, or their career journeys at the biggest media platform focused on the next generation of investing.

Mental Health & Emotional Self-care

This workshop, which will by led by Dr. Ana Zellhuber and moderated by Juanita Islas, will cover how to prioritize your mental health while reporting and recognize the signs of psychological and emotional trauma. Journalists, particularly those who are women and people of color, are covering traumatic events and report feeling high levels of stress and burnout, while experiencing identity-based risks and aggressions. Facing this reality, this webinar aims to help reporters, editors and newsroom leaders understand how these stressors impact their physical and mental health, and will provide strategies to cope with them.

Raising the bar for LGBTQ+ Latino stories in media

Representation of diverse communities shall always be a goal of news media, and the bar extends beyond ethnic and political diversity. It's past time LGBTQ+ voices are heard and amplified. It's time to make impactful and relevant LGBTQ+ Latino stories not just a reality, but a norm. During this session, panelists will dive into just how to do that.

The fight against the erasure of American Latino history

History and cultural respect go hand-in-hand. Cut out one, and we begin losing the other. American Latino history should not be silenced any more than American Latino voices should be. In this session, hear panelists discuss what can be done to stop the silencing of American Latino history.

Addressing anti-Blackness & anti-Indigenous racism in the Latinx community

Latinos are not exempt from growing up amid Euro-centric, fair-skinned portrayals and perspectives dominating the discourse and narratives about who we are and what we value. How can we identify and deconstruct colorism in US news coverage, in our newsrooms and in our organization effectively without it feeling performative? How do we give space to facilitate conversation, reconciliation and action to do better? How can we learn to understand these communities better to cover these issues?
